I think I should give my work some sort of trophy for the 1 billionth time they have made a short-term money-saving decision that will come back and bite them in the ass long-term.
There is a department at my job which is filled with some amazingly talented people who are leaders in their field doing work no one is doing right now at this level of creativity and excellence. The project that they are on will end in a few months, and the company hasn't lined up a new project that will use their skillset. So, they've decided to save money in the meantime, they will close that department, and transfer them all to other places, doing less interesting work. Now the work that they do also happens at other companies. Companies that are hiring right now. Companies that will snatch them up at the drop of a hat, and keep them for a very long time. We will lose all these people, and then, if we actually wanted to do this type of work again, we wont be able to, because those people will be working somewhere else. Instead of just floating them for a while and letting them do some R&D, or heaven forbid, work harder to get a job to use them, we'll "save money" by doing something that will drive them somewhere else, and be totally screwed if we needed them again. And it's not the first time we've done nearly the exact same thing. Maybe a bowling trophy, or a plaque. Or just a dunce cap. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
