2004-03-02 2:15 PM They Gotta Pay! I like it.
No, scratch that. I friggin' LOVE IT! The California Supreme Court yesterday ruled that Catholic Charities, like EVERY OTHER PRIVATE EMPLOYER in the state of California, has to provide for contraception as part of their employee's prescription plan. I'm sorry all you Catholics out there, but you can't just curl up under religious freedom arguments and violate the laws of the land willy-nilly. The law does take into account religious employers, and lays out a straight-forward system of determining if an employer qualifies. Catholic Charities did not qualify as a religious employer. Case fucking closed. You cannot operate under the most beneficial laws for running your company and then try to claim special exemptions due to your name. You either take one or the other, but you can't just throw the bible at us and make us give you anydamnedthing you want. And of course, all the Catholics out there are up and arms. You know, you'd think they'd welcome the decision. Having fewer children running around within reach could solve some of their other P.R. problems. Score one for the rationalists. We seem to get few enough victories these days that we should take a moment to cheer the ones we do get. Joseph Haines, signing off from The Edge of the Abyss.
