Stage Two

Okay, so this part has been smeared over several days, I still haven't gotten formal notification and the process is still ongoing.

But, I have been accepted for an intensive one-year screenwriting program at Vancouver Film School. We are moving to Canada.

I would have mentioned this some days ago, but as I said, everything is still jumbled around. I haven't gotten any formal notification that I've been accepted, although my admissions advisor e-mailed me about a week ago saying they'd looked over my portfolio and I'd been "pasted with flying colors." I guess this is some Canadian way of showing praise, like little gold stars on your paper in our culture... (yes, many Canadian jokes will follow)

So I'm in, but there's still some question of just how in. I'm also a finalist for the single full scholarship position they offer in the screenwriting program each year. I figured the odds on that were pretty long, but as I'm preparing to move across the continent and be unemployed for at least a year, not having to pay to go there would be a huge help.

And indeed, I appear to be on the shortlist for that, but they want to interview candidates. I've been playing phone tag with them for days now. We had an actual firm appointment set up for Friday, but then apparently they had some hellish systems crash and all their phones and email were dead all day. We will try again Monday. Wish me luck.

But regardless of how that goes, it looks like I'm in. That was the cornerstone of the longstanding plans to evacuate to Vancouver that some of you have known about for a while and others are just finding out about now. That plan's been taking shape since last summer - pretty much since I came back from the Dawn of the Dead set in Toronto and realized something had to give.

Thankfully I have a far finer wife than I deserve, the sort who recognizes sooner than most when some kind of huge, sweeping change needs to be made, and then goes ahead and makes it. When she realized that I was in fact not joking about wanting to quit my job and move to LA, she swung into action.

Both of us really hate LA (no offense, Jenn), and while I had some overriding reason to go there, she didn't. There was no way I was getting her to LA. But an amazing amount of stuff is being produced in Vancouver now, particularly TV and genre stuff which offers more likely employment prospects. And it was a _much_ easier sell in terms of place to go live.

And so we're off, probably in June, by the time we get the house taken care of and various other niceties. I don't know what will happen after that, but it's sure to be very different from what's come before.

More news as things follow, I guess.
