2006-11-01 9:20 PM NaNoWriMo! Day 01 Mood: Excited Read/Post Comments (4) |
When last we left our frustrated writer, he was mired in yet another painful -- althought not as painful as the previous one -- revision. I realize that revision before the novel is finished is sometimes frowned upon, but what I do is this. As I move forward (write a few scenes, try to modify the running outline) I hit points in the current scene that require subtle changes to something that came before. When these subtle changes stack up to the point that I can;t see forward, I go back and revise. And so the Word Counter at the left there is misleading. Last time I took a count, that was where I was. During the revision, I have probably added 2000-2500 words to what I have. And some has come out. And more will be thinned or fattened. I'm a little over halfway through my entire draft. Chapters 1 - 6 are revised. Chapters 7-12 awit my editing efforts. At that point, I will update the words counter. After a horribly busy day at work (in San Francisco), I stoopped in Dublin at my favorite writing spot -- Barnes and Noble Cafe. After gorging on a chocolate chunk cookie and cold milk, I got to work. I modified one scene, split another scene into two and totally rewrote onr of them, and then wrote one new scene that I had previously taken out a few drafts ago, but I'm adding it back in a revised way so it works. I don't say I am modifying it because I am adding it back without looking at how I wrote it last time. Are you confused? I am. But it's November. And it NaNoWriMo! So, let's roll!
