There is an organization in Washington (The Washington Defense of Marriage Alliance) that is trying to get a proposition on the ballot in Washington. It basically says that all couples who get married must show proof of procreation within 3 years or their marriage is annulled. It's a very interesting attack on the state's reasoning behind why they are able to ban gay marriage. Washington State claims that there is a "legitimate state interest" in allowing marriage only to heterosexual couples able to have and raise children together. And because of this state interest, they can ban gay marriage because they are incapable of having children together without outside help. The problem, of course, in that logic is that there are plenty of married couples who are also incapable of having children together without outside help. And couples who simply choose not to have children. We'll just have to wait and see if it works. Read/Post Comments (1) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
