You've never seen anything like this.
Some lucky person in the state of New Mexico just won the $206.9 million Powerball lottery, which spans many states. Without doing the math, it would be something like successfully picking a combo of Angels, Brewers, Cubs, Dodgers, Phillies, Rays, Red Sox and White Sox as this year's postseason clubs.
The last time the Rays were in the postseason: Never. It would have been like predicting a total solar eclipse, in the daytime, in antiquity, with no charts.
complete coverage
The last time Chicago had both teams in the same field: 1906. It's just a guess that no living human can honestly remember having witnessed that.
The last time the Brewers were in the postseason: 1982. The average Brewers fan (under 30) doesn't know what it feels like yet.
The last time Los Angeles had both teams in the same field: 2004. During the only such occasion, each team exited in the first round.
The last time no New York team was represented: 1993. There is still a lingering state of shock now that the ballparks and seasons are closed...
...There could be some serious drought-busting, a common feature of postseasons in this decade. If the Cubs win it all, that would mean that the three longest-standing droughts were ended in a legendary five-year span in baseball, following the Red Sox ending an 86-year drought in 2004 and the White Sox ending an 88-year drought in 2005.
Here are the teams and their last World Series championships: Angels (2002), Brewers (none), Cubs (1908), Dodgers (1988), Phillies (1980), Rays (none), Red Sox (2007) and White Sox (2005).
When the first pitch is thrown in the White Sox-Rays opener on Thursday, it will officially mean that every active Major League franchise has been to a postseason.
Here are the active franchises that never have won a World Series: Astros, Brewers, Mariners, Nationals, Padres, Rangers, Rays, Rockies. Of those, the only teams that never have been to a World Series are the Mariners, Nationals, Rangers and Rays.
If you want to stump a coworker today at the office, just ask them a "When's the last time ..." question that has to do with this postseason field.
The answer probably will be "never."
Postseason 2008: You've never seen anything like this.
