Race and the White House

There's been so much talk about electing our first black President. I realize what a historic moment this is. It truly is an incredible thing that we have come so far.

But I think that one thing we're not talking about is that I don't think he was elected "because" he's black. Or even "despite" being black. I voted for him, and many many other people voted for him, because he was the best person for the job.

He inspired us. He earned our trust. He made us believe. Because of the person he is, not the color of his skin.

In talking so much about him being our "first black President" sometimes it seems like that's the only thing that is being made to define him, or his presidency.

I'm having trouble finding the words to express what I mean, but I hope anyone reading this understands what I'm trying to say.
