2005-03-12 3:17 PM elevators Naoto has this complaint about elevator ettiquete in Japan. People constantly jab the "door open" button for eachother. Even when it's patently unnecessary. He says they do it because they want to "seem nice." I think it's just an ingrained habit.
I don't think Japan has very good ettiquette, though. Older people will just walk right in front of me and my stroller into an elevator even if I've been there waiting HOURS before them. Then they try to make up for it by pushing that "door open" button when we get off. Really I just want them to get out of the way so I can turn my stroller around. Not to mention that hordes of people who try to cram themselves into elevators despite the fact that small children are easily squished. Not to mention the obviously hale and hearty young students/middle aged women/ smelly old race-going geezers to use the elevator instead of the escalator. Then there's no room for people like me (with stroller, not allowed to use escalator) who actually need it, not to mention the people on crutches or spine twisted old ladies. Sheesh.
