2007-10-12 5:21 AM Product of Public Schools You guys all know I live in white suburbia, right? And that the subcommunity of Japanese is the one I am most in contact with right now, right?
Well those two groups are ones with real big emphasis on education. Which is great. I also think education is important. I might even be, as Japanese culture calls it, an "education mama", meaning I participate heavily in and invest myself directly in my children's education to the point of insanity. However, there's just one thing that's different. I grew up believing in public education. So no private schools. (not that we could afford it anyway). And of course I wonder if I am doing my children a disservice, especially when I hear about private schools' resources and programs, and SAT scores for their graduating classes. So this article about a recent study saying that when family income and characteristics are taken into account, there was no difference between private school and public school scores in math, reading, and science, makes me very very happy. Yep, it's not the school, it's parental involvement. Or natural inclination, it seems. One less thing to guilt myself over. Read/Post Comments (1) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
