2008 Books #80 Nightlife

Caitlin Kittredge is a Pacific Northwest writer. I got to ogle her from afar at a reading at the Beaverton Powells when another author came to read and a whole contingent of Seattle authors showed up for support.

So I bought her book. It's a story of a cop in a city (Nocturne) where two kind of witches and werewolves and demons hang out.

Only the cop was bitten by a werwolf long ago, and instead of becoming part of the pack of her biter, she ran away and so is a Loner werewolf. This supposedly makes her vulnerable to other packs (although the only run in she had with a pack werewolf she "dominated" them, so this didn't really come out in the story for me)

I'd have to say that I liked the characters in this more than I liked how the story hung together. There were a few times where I had to reread dialogue because I was confused, and I was left with a lot of questions at the end of the story.

It never really explained why she ran away from her biter (other than he was "bad", but as the one sex scene in this book proves, she likes it "bad") or who two of the big main bad guys were. (one was posessed? one was a watchman of some kind?)

Still, it was a fun read. Recommended because I expect this writer to get better.
