2005-03-03 1:11 PM So much for that Note added 5/19/05: The "new entry" notice subscribers were sent today was accidental. Sorry! This is a post from March.
Having done Powerpoint presentations for internal meetings at large pharmaceutical companies, I shouldn't be surprised. Biogen apparently knew that Tysabri (formerly "Antegren"), its new multiple sclerosis drug, altered white blood cells in such a way that the JC virus (a virus we all have and aren't bothered by) could be allowed to run rampant. Two people have died from the resulting disease, PML. PML stands for Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy. About 5% of people with AIDS get it. It kills half of them, and most of the rest go insane, blind, or mute. In trials, Tysabri reduced the frequency and severity of MS exacerbations by something like 80%. I was waiting to start using it until the two-year trial data became available in April. Woulda been nice. Read/Post Comments (9) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
