Two wheels bad. Four wheels good!

This entry will be interesting to maybe two people, including me. (Hi, Kenny.)

My $250 Trek 7100 (like this, only without front suspension, which I hate) needs about $240 worth of repairs, and I'm suddenly instrumental in one of the two major initiatives this coming year at my day job. Clearly God is telling me to get a better bike.

The 7100 was nice because it was cheap, and I had every expectation of trashing it within three or four years when I bought it. It's not as though I wipe anything off after I get home from cycling in a blizzard; I just let the salt and snow drip onto an old towel and then squirt some more lube on the chain next time I take it out. (Yes, without cleaning the chain.) This is both because I don't have any space for even simple repairs in this New York apartment and because I have a limited personality: I don't clean and fix. I just ride.

But now here I'm thinking about a good bike. Like maybe a Cannondale T800, a full-fledged touring bike that would set me back around $900. This isn't a bike I can trash. So here's what I figure. Keep the 7100 for icebiking--put it in storage when our name comes up on the waiting list for additional storage space--and get something nicer for my daily commute (and have it serviced more often than I do now with the cheapie Trek).

Apparently I'm poised to turn into one of those geeks with two bikes and reasons he needs them both.

Really, honey. There's just no way around it.
