When you've been a mystery writer for a while, you can't help but to have encountered a lot of essays in which other mystery writers muse about serial killers.

I sort of gloss past them, both because I'm not interested in writing serial killer books and because I get the sense, while glossing, that the writers don't really know.

This is the best I've read on the subject. It's not from a mystery writer.
