The Islamic Republic of Iraq

One topic of the "liberation" of Iraq (quoted because it hasn't happened yet) has been what happens when the people get to choose their form of governance and they choose Islam? It's been a worry that Iraq will go from a corrupt secular state to a corrupt Islamist state which just makes matters worse. After all, no state can truly offer equality to men and women if its laws are not allowed to contradict Islamic teachings (or Christian teachings for that matter).

Juan Cole, the most informed person-at-large about the Middle East it seems, has posted about the Draft version of the Iraqi Constitution. The language is still be decided upon, but Cole has some good analysis of the language under debate, what it really means and how it applies to the country. He also talks about the continuing violence in Iraq that seems to have been lost in our news media due to Karl Rove and Judge Roberts... but let's try not to talk about Karl Rove and focus on Judge Roberts, shall we? Damn they play the "Hey look a monkey!" game well.

Cole's entry only takes a couple of minutes to read and it's very accessible, I highly recommend taking a few. I also recommend reading his journal on a regular basis.
