Since January, 1994, I have operated a web site where archaeologists needing volunteers or staff on their projects could post open positions, and people looking for projects could connect with the project organizers.
10 years. That's a long time. It's even longer in Internet years. It's had to give the site up after such a period, and even more difficult to relinquish the number-one search result on Google for the term "archaeological fieldwork." But enough's enough. Mostly I made this tough decision because the Archaeological Institute of America finally got their butt in gear and put up their own version. My site was originally established because of frustration with the AIA not providing leadership in this area. It took them long enough, and then they blatantly ripped off part of my site to do theirs. But otherwise they've done a decent job, and they're getting significantly more postings than my site is now. I see no need to continue running a duplicative service, and with plenty of other things to do, I have no desire to keep it going. It served its purpose. It connected countless people to fieldwork opportunities in the early days of the web. That's good enough. Read/Post Comments (6) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
