2001-09-15 5:40 PM Aftermath Mood: Worried |
Tuesday, September 11, 2001 was the most difficult day of teaching I've ever had. But being in the classroom, providing a sense of normalcy for my students, seemed like the right thing to do. A student of Arabic descent was beaten at ASU on Thursday night. He has lived in the US for 12 years and has been an American citizen for 2 years. He recalled that this was the first time that an issue had been made of his faith in Islam. He is physically ok. A student of mine at ASU lost a family member in the WTC bombing. He said that he didn't feel comfortable coming to school this week for fear that he might not be able to control his anger at students of Arabic descent. As a faculty member, I had been requested to be lenient with the needs of the students at this horrible time. But what I wanted to say to this student was, "If they're at school, they WERE NOT ON THE PLANES!!!!" But that I cannot say. Sigh. Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
