I had to do one of my least favorite things today - I had to yell at students. One of my classes has too many students coming in late and they are distracting the other students. So, I informed them that I would start locking the door, especially on the day of their exam next week.

I know that it's nothing compared with what high school teachers have to do, but that's one of the reasons I enjoy teaching college - I generally do not have to babysit the students. But I find that I have to become a disciplinarian at least once each semester. Sigh. I don't like to get angry or confrontational, so I've been feeling kinda icky ever since.

Of course, after this incident I came back to my office to overhear the department chair dealing with a student who was complaining that their physics instructor won't let them show up to lab over 1/2 hour late. Um, at what point should we expect students to realize that they have to show up to the class times that they selected?
