From the Merriam Webster dictionary: Caretaker: (Date-1858) One that gives physical or emotional care and support Caregiver: (Date-1975) A person who provides direct care (as for children or the chronically ill) I've always found it amusing that you can "give care" or "take care" and have it mean pretty much the same thing. These words come to mind today because I've been ill for awhile, and Greg has been a splendid caregiver. As soon as I feel better, I will cook all of his favorite meals for him.
