For those of you interested in trying to observe the effects of the Deep Impact probe crashing into Comet Tempel 1, here is some helpful (hopefully) info.

The impact is expected to occur at 10:52pm (plus/minus a few minutes) Pacific time on the night of July 3, 2005. A good pair of binoculars should allow you to see it, if it brightens as much as we hope. Here's a map of the sky facing west at 10:52pm (made with Starry Night Pro):

The brightest object in the western sky at that time will be Jupiter, and Spica is a bluish white star to the left of Jupiter. For those of you who want to try to observe the comet with a telescope, the approximate coordinates at that time are: (current epoch) RA 13hr 38 min, Dec -9 degrees 35 arcmin

Clear skies, everyone!
