the funeral of a young child

The funeral of a young child
Never having witnessed his third month
The service was long and traditional,
It felt "normal"
Such a young baby
few even had a chance to grow sentiment
Still, pain is present
All pictures of the child in a hospital background
Baby blue night clothes with bright pink medical tools
The baby's young life defined by struggle
Purity over pain
Cheeks still look soft,
even if tubes are taped across them
The family seems numb
but perhaps slightly at peace
I look out of the corner of my eye
to kneel when it's time to kneel
I decide not to take communion
The child did not have the opportunity
The funeral of a young child
Never having lived through an entire season
The Father speaking on the miracle of life
The miracle is also a tease
A riddle with a premature end
