2008-03-14 1:45 PM why you are going to get divorced When I was an undergrad I once knew this guy who was pre-med. He once told me I only had to get a C in my classes because it wasn't like I was going to go to grad school or work after I graduated -- I was just going to get married and have babies. He was truly sincere in this assessment. He and his own wife had no children, but still she stayed home after they married and took care of the house. Now, if this was her choice and what I she wanted to do that's great -- a big part of feminism for me is to have the choice to do what I desire to do with my life, and for my rights to be equal with men's rights. HOWEVER, the assumption that that's what women do in Idaho, and therefore what I would do with my life, completely pissed me off.
So I did graduate, and I did get married, and then I went to grad school and I worked in my chosen profession, and then I chose to quit and rear a family. It wasn't because there weren't other options for me -- I did it because I felt it was what the right thing to do for myself and my family was. The pre-med student above once told me that many marriages don't survive med school because it's such a stressful life. He was a little worried about his marriage. No, I remember thinking, you won't get divorced because your wife found the life stressful -- she'll leave you because you're a dick. Thinking about feminism today. Can you tell?
