I went down south to pick up Winter Wednesday night. Some electrical work needed to be done in his apartment and we had been making plans for a visit anyway, so LD and I went down and picked him up. He's good company, but I always have to acclimate myself to him again, and remind myself that he's not the adventuresome sort. And, truth be told, I'm not much of one myself, particularly with children. I mean, if we're talking Indiana Jones types of adventures. But mini-adventures that don't involve risking life, limb, and time in a cell? Yeah, I'm all for that. When I was young my adventures were usually solitary affairs, usually involving fields, ditch banks, lakes and ponds. In high school I could occasionally recruit another person to go on an adventure with me, and could even do so for part of college. When I was a freshman I had a friend from L.A. and, oh, we had some good times. She was also very imaginative. Did you know we were chased out of a driveway on the reservation by some old man with a gun? (Well, we weren't, but Amanda was convinced we had been, which made it all the more interesting.) Rice told me the other day he's up for having adventures with me. Ah, what a sweetie. I know he'd probably rather not, but it's what we do for love, isn't it? We learn to cook without gluten, we learn to be patient with the lone socks left here and there, we learn to go on adventures with those we love, and we learn to let our loved ones go out on their own adventures. We let them live their dreams, and share other dreams together as a partnership and as a family. And right now my dreams involve taking a nap.
