2007-04-30 3:54 PM Heaven is not for whores. Martin Luther King, Jr is in hell for committing adultery. So are most Protestants. Almost all Muslims are terrorists. My campus is full of whore-mongers.
Every once in a while a stocky, suspender-clad man finds himself on our campus, the turpentine of Christian fundamentalism dripping from his voice and onto the hot South Carolina pavement. His red face trumpets the evils of homosexuality as he references passages in the Bible which condemn premarital sex, sodomy, and just about everything else. I happened to be walking back to my dorm as such an event was transpiring. I sat down and observed the sociological circus taking place in front of the food court. A few openly gay students of the collegiate community held up banners protesting the man's fiery rhetoric, and the resident drag queen, Owen, was prancing around looking like Transvestite Barbie. A blonde wig masked his dark hair and his large, doughy body was squeezed into a strapless hot pink dress. His commando boots stomped with conviction as he puffed away on a Newport, informing all of us that God loves gays. Our kindred speaker told Owen that he was "probably giving young men erections" and that he should "stop reading porno and get saved." Mr. Fundamentalist was not easily deterred by hecklers, except for one who threw a cup of ice on him. There is a petition against this man speaking on our campus but it will never go anywhere. He clearly knows his rights and revels in first amendment freedom. Even though we can wholeheartedly disagree with his way of thinking, he has a right to speak whether the campus wants him to or not. The man attracts quite a crowd and I imagine the only way to effectively eradicate him from our premises is to pay him no mind. Mr. Fundamentalist gets a thrill from the drag queens tap dancing in front of him and the student journalists who snap pictures of him. We are responding to his message; even though we dismiss it as being ludicrous, we are still hearing it, and that's all he wants. Read/Post Comments (2) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
