2008-02-15 7:48 PM The Northern Illinois shooting gets weirder Upon first hearing of this event my reaction went something along the lines of, Great. Another miserable depressed loser who managed to kill innocent people before finally killing himself. I was certain this would lead to another round of the "we should have known" game and more implications for universities regarding student safety. Come to think of it, I would have preferred the previous option.
The shooter in the Northern Illinois incident was a graduate student who had received academic scholarships for his research in sociology and mental health. The only offense on record was a speeding ticket which he dutifully paid. Great. Now not only do we have to watch out for trenchcoated sociopaths, but the diligent student sitting next to me might just decide to blow my brains out one day. If somebody wants to kill someone there isn't much stopping them. How easy is it to walk into a loaded classroom and just start firing?
