Well, last weekend Emil and I went to Mackinac for a few nights . . .

I think the scenery here is among the most beautiful on the planet:

While we were there we rode along the bluff above the Grand Hotel (which was in the first picture on this page). We'd never done that before, and I was not surprised to discover that the views were amazing:

(I think it's totally cool that we both have red, 70s-era ten speeds, just like we'd planned that. Which of course we did not; it just seems to have happened. As if, over the years, we've grown close or something . . . )

Here are a few of the houses on West Bluff Road:

That house has one heck of a view:

Yep, I wouldn't mind inheriting one of those! Heck, I don't even mind going up for the occasional ride-by . . .

It was a fun weekend all around. I had been planning to ride in the Big Mac Shoreline Tour, but I came down with a nasty cold on Friday, and so elected to sleep in on Saturday morning rather than get up early just to push myself over 25 miles. Still in all, with one thing and another, we ended up doing 15, anyhow. And it was really nice to get away, just the two of us.

I have to say, part of the pleasure in the weekend was being able to leave the kids home with perfect confidence that nothing untoward was going to happen. I even asked Charlie to be home at 10:30 each night, and he was . . . no complaints, either. (I suspect that Emma had houseguests because the house was suspiciously clean when we returned - but heck. If that's the worst we have to fear - she has guests, for whom she cleans - I think we're getting off pretty lucky . . . )

So it was a nice weekend, all in all. And now I'm looking forward to this one, when I stay home, sleep a lot, and prepare for the upcoming week . . .
