2006-01-23 7:23 AM the two-city problem Read/Post Comments (0) |
Yes, I've got it again. We've been home for over 24 hours, now, but I still don't quite know where I am. Last night, while making dinner, I reached into the fridge for the broccoli that's in the fridge in Youngstown. This morning as I was waking I heard a truck outside, and I imagined it on the streets near my father-in-law's house.
And then, let's add a third city. I'm off to Lansing today to put in my appearance - I can't say 'teach,' because I've been teaching frantically for the past several days, and I'm actually more or less caught up with my classes. But I have to pack my Red Bag - I have to remember to transfer the requisite keys, notebooks, power cords, wallets, ID, etc., etc. from the places to which they migrated when I took them all to Y'town . . . this process frazzles me. I'm not a terrifically organized person to begin with, and then when I get this level of complexity in my life, the wheels start to come off. (A few years ago, when I worked at home, at the Ann Arbor campus, and in Dearborn, I nearly went crazy just keeping track of my stuff.) When I was going back and forth to Cleveland a few years ago, I started leaving my suitcase there; I'd wash all the clothes before I went home, and re-pack the case, and then when I came back to Cleveland I just wore those clothes again. It worked out very well - clothes became one less thing to remember. (I would do it again, but sadly, I don't think I'm going to be making that many trips back to Y'town; this next one may be the last.) Ah, well. Must remember a clean towel to take to the pool today . . . Teaching online in this situation is a real relief, actually. I find it very soothing; it's a different, engaging world into which I can step at any time, for one thing. And for another, it provides some continuity in my life. Not surprisingly, with all this attention I'm giving it, the class (or classes, I should say - four on one website) is going really well. I'm having a lot of fun! Well, time to get ready to go . . . Now where's my stuff?? Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
