I've just finished knitting the socks I made for Emma's boyfriend, David, for Christmas. He has tried them on; I am happy to report that they fit just fine. I really like the sock pattern; you knit the socks in long strips, see (making indentations for the heel and toe), and then fold them up and sew them together. I might make a lot of these; the pattern is awesome.

But, you know, if this year is any indication, we won't long be needing wool socks . . . Tonight's low (that's right, low) is supposed to be in the mid-30s. Most years, that's actually a bit high for the high. ("Hmm. January Thaw is here a bit early," I'd be saying, since it isn't supposed to arrive until mid-month.) But this is ridiculous. Today the temperature reached 47 and tomorrow it's more of the same. It was so warm that Em and I went to the mall without coats on. (I can't even locate my gloves or hat at this point.)

It was sunny today, too; I'd have liked to be doing something better with the best of the day than shopping . . . but Emma wanted to spend some of her gift card - and she wanted to, um, get her nose pierced, which required the signature of a parent. (And she's only got one parent likely to sign for that sort of thing . . . the other one would've told her to wait three months, until she's eighteen and can indulge in such follies without our consent. Me, I'm a pushover about personal appearance things . . . my mother was so controlling about mine when I was a kid that I fear I went off the laissez-faire end with our kids . . . )

(Aside: Emma was "on vacation" in Ann Arbor last week. In retrospect, it was a very relaxing week. I love the girl dearly but she does have her high-maintenance moments.)

Anyhow, the weirdest thing about the weather is that I'm starting to notice myself getting grumpy because the days are so short; if it's going to be this warm, then subconsciously I think we should be having daylight until 8:00, at least. I have to consciously remind myself that it's the middle of "winter."

Tomorrow I'm taking the snow tires off my commuting bike. If that doesn't cause the temperatures to plummet, nothing will . . .
