2004-10-13 1:41 PM The Daily Show...Fake News??? Read/Post Comments (6) |
In the past few days, I've read two articles (Rolling Stone and CNN.com) about "The Daily Show." In both of the articles, Jon Stewart makes the repeated claim that "The Daily Show" is nothing but a fake news show and shouldn't be taken all that seriously. I couldn't disagree more. Not only is it not "fake news," it's actually one of the first places I go to for REAL news. From what I can tell, they do a better job covering the news than most network and cable news sources. They ask the harder questions, they dig a little deeper, and they often times reveal what's below the tip of the iceberg.
Although Jon Stewart knows how to ask some pretty tough questions, I do think that he needs to work on his impartiality. Even a liberal blowhard such as myself can usually tell that he asks the conservative guests on his show the harder questions while the more liberal leaning people on his show get lobbed some pretty easy to hit questions. Not that I really mind all that much... Even their mock pundit pieces where they track down random stories from all over the country have more weight than most anything I've seen on Nightline or Dateline NBC. When it's all said and done, I think the Daily Show will rank near the top of my all-time favorite television shows list. It's probably there already. But fake news??? It's not fake news. Calling it fake news knocks the show down from the greatness that it is. It's not fake news, it's real news made more interesting because more bases are covered.
