Praying for other people

The FMLA had a function outside today raising issues about Reproductive Rights. As we sat out in the hot sun passing out handbills and flyers, and trying to persuade people to look at our displays, a student sat about 15 feet away from our table in deep prayer.

I'm not against praying for other people, and if praying makes someone feel better about a situation, then they should be free to pray anywhere that they like. But I found his praying for our table to be a tad bit condescending...just a tad. ;-)

Being a Sociology major, I've gotten really good at looking at things through Sociological tinted glasses, and his act wreaked of symbollic interactionism. If his main goal was to just pray for us, then he could do that anywhere, anytime, and forever how long he wanted to. He could have done it in his car, his apartment, or any other place you can think of. But he saw his act as having some kind of symbollic meaning. To me, it seems that his act of praying was more about making a statement against our display, than it was about actually tapping into the higher spirit.

I don't know.

I'll post more on this later I 'spose.
