Regrets, I've Had a Few...

Anya and I went to a really neat Karaoke place last weekend. It's one of those places where you and your friends check out an entire room and control the flow of things. It's kinda neat when you stand in the hallway because you can hear 15 different people singing 15 different songs in 15 different rooms.

The karaoke bar is in a predominately Asian part of Austin, so the bar has a very definite "Asian" feel to it. While there are probably about 1500 US "pop" songs (everything from Patsy Cline to Beyonce) most of the Karaoke selection is Asian music I've never heard of. While you're singing, the giant televisions in the room show all kinds of random images of Japanese daily life. So while you're singing "Jump Around" or "Killing in the Name Of," there are all kinds of video in the background of dragon boat races and Japanese people skiing.

Karaoke's great. I think it's fun to go out there and see how you stack up against the artists who made the songs famous in the first place. It's also fun to see friends and family go up and act like someone else for a while. I'd LOVE to go to karaoke with my family sometime. How cool would it be to see Luke rock out a Dylan song? Or to see Mom sing Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful?" Next family function, I think we need to make this happen... :-)

I've been in a bit of a self-conscious funk recently. So most of the stuff I did at Karaoke was not very entertaining, neither in its musicality or the on the sheer embarrasment level.

But I attempted Frank Sinatra's "My Way." It didn't start out well, but as the song progressed, I really got into it. I'm not sure about the quality of my singing, so I'm not sure how that sounded, but I really let my inner Sinatra come out.

Let me tell you, I think singing "My Way" would be a good way to begin the day. It's such a great empowerment song. As the song builds and builds, the words just keep on driving forward. If you're ever in a funk, put on "My Way," crank the speakers, and fucking LET IT RIP! I guarantee you'll feel better afterwards.
