I'm in the process of going through my iTunes catalogue at work and ranking all of the songs in my library. I'm also using the opportunity to weed out songs that don't "make the cut." The whole process has led me to wonder about my friends' and family's music listening habits.

Substitute another player into the heading if you're not into the whole Apple thing. And also, I know that some of these questions require estimations, so do your best.

1. Who is your most listened to artist?

The Beatles. This shouldn't surprise anyone. Elliott Smith is the second most listened to artist on my iTunes. Again, not surprising to anyone who knows me. The Beastie Boys, Beck, Granddaddy, and Johnny Cash (in no particular order) all rank below.

2. What is your most listened to song(s)?

Make Your Own Kind of Music by Mama Cass = 21 times; It was the song used in the LOST season 2 opener. It's a great song. Very catchy. I also went through a kick ass Mamas and Papas phase. So together with listening to LOST music when I'm browsing the message boards and listening to the quintessential sixties band, this song gets a lot of play.

Hold Tight by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick, and Tich = 16 times; Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof" featured this song and it was love at first listen. For my estimation, one of the best rock songs of all time.

Pretty (Ugly Before) by Elliott Smith = 15 times; Not sure why this song is played as much as it is. "Shuffle" on my iTunes loves this song. I love it too.

3. Who is your least listened to artist?

There are a few artists on my iTunes that don't get heavy rotation. John Williams is probably my least listened to artists. I occasionally bust out some of the major theme pieces (Star Wars theme, Superman theme, Indiana Jones theme), but I rarely listen to any of his other tracks (the Nixon soundtrack, Far and Away soundtrack, Born on the Fourth of July soundtrack). I'm not 13 anymore.

4. What is your least listened to song?

I have a couple of Limp Bizkit songs and Beatles songs sung by the Looney Tunes characters that don't get much play. I have hundreds of songs that never get played on my iTunes though. I'm working to remedy this; getting rid of crap and listening to more of my music.

5. Do you rate songs? If so, talk briefly about your ranking system. Are you liberal with your rankings, or are your 5 and 4 star rankings few and far between?

I think I'm pretty fair with my rankings. Few (relatively speaking) songs get 5 stars, because I only give 5 stars to songs that are true classics and to songs that I could listen to and never get tired of. I give out a fair number of 4 stars. 3 stars is probably my most popular ranking. I give out a few 2 stars and fewer one stars, but I'm getting rid of most music that would rate a 2 or 1 star.

Even though I am a Beatles fanboy, not all Beatles songs get 4 or 5 stars. Some songs (mainly from their BBC and Anthology discs) get lower rankings. As far as Beatles go, the "produced" stuff tends to fair better than the off the cuff stuff. I'm sure my brother Luke and I differ on this one.

6. Who is your highest rated artist?

Beatles, Elliott Smith, Rage Against the Machine, Johnny Cash, Pink Floyd are all bands that routinely get high ratings in my list. Oh yeah, and that Luke McKibben fella routinely gets 4 and 5 stars.

7. Who is your least rated?

There's some heavy metal in my library that doesn't get rated all that well. Slayer and Pantera don't rank well. I'm not a big fan of most of the music from Lion King and Alladin, but I'm too sentimental to trash the lesser music from those soundtracks.

8. Your iTunes philosophy: Have as much music as possible, or do you have more of lean and mean approach to your music library?

I'm more of a lean and mean type of guy. I just want the best of the best. But I do have a lot of music, so it's kind of a win/win situation. And I'll always keep entire albums of musicians that I like; Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd.

9. Do you use iTunes more for random music play, or do you more often use it to listen to entire albums?

Mostly random play. Sadly, I listen to most of my music as I slave away at work, so I rarely get the opportunity to just sit down and listen to entire albums that way I once did when I was younger.

10. Show us your stats! Give me song counts, days worth of music, and GB's.

8269 songs, 21.7 days worth of music, and 29.18 GBs.

And a Bonus: Press the random button, push play and tell me which song comes out first:

"Thief in the Night" by Aceyalone.
