The soundtrack for Monday's drive ended up being:
* some Handel (David Daniels) * some hymns *a mix of French pop (Bruni, Goldman, Cabrel, Le Forestier) * two Big Star albums (Radio City is so much better than #1 Record) * about half of The Merry Widow (Kitty Carlisle c. 1944) * Vaughan Williams's variations on Tallis and Greensleeves and Dives... * an Americana sampler from 1998. I can see why some of the folks on it didn't hit it big (major lyrical clunkiness) but some of them are worth noting: ** Jeff Black - "Birmingham Road" and "That's Just About Right." I may get the album. Orchestration/riffs remind me of Springsteen (and a bit of Simple Minds as well), but the lyrics remind me of, I dunno, a mix of Sting and Dar. It's a bit weird -- they don't not fit but they don't have that click of rightness -- but I do like his sound a lot. ** Donna the Buffalo - "The Tides of Time." I tell you, zydeco is ideal driving music. ** Michael Martin Murphy - "Born to Buck Bad Luck." This is a redneck (technically cowboy) song that would drive me bonkers if I had to listen to it over and over - it's corny and the chorus is deliberately fists-pumping-in-the-air dopey - but the verse writing kicks ass (I have a soft spot for hard-driving country anthems where there's an extra-long line that the singer just has to barrel through without coming up for air). Also: * I'm posting this from Ground Effects coffeehouse, where I'm drinking something called a "Frothy Heifer" that's quite good. * I met a friend I hadn't seen since high school for lunch. She looked fantastic and it was terrific to chat about her research/teaching in Family Studies. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
