The Alley Cat is closing. WAHHHHHH!
The Waldenbooks in Rivergate Mall is also closing, on January 24. All the books in the store are currently 40% off. You won't find Twilight there, but there are still numerous copies of recent Newbery winners, Vampire Knight, and other goodies. (And I scored the copies of Vassalord I'd been after. Heh.)
Nashville Shakespeare Festival's production of Richard III is charming and vivid, and runs until February 1. It has a vaudeville theme, is well-acted and designed, and Wesley Paine swanning in on roller skates is a sight to see. Queen Anne and Princess Elizabeth are a little too simpery for me (my gut reaction was to be annoyed by them rather than sympathetic to their plights, but that's admittedly one of my hot buttons -- I spent most of Die Fliegende Hollander in love with the music but silently screaming "You are such a NINNY!" at the so-called heroine); that said, why Anne succumbs to Richard's wooing is more clear than in any other production I've seen. The marquee (indicating who's still alive through the use of headshots) is also inspired.
From Ms Cheap's column in today's Tennessean:
Mozart lovers will love the Birthday Concert to Celebrate Mozart's 253rd Birthday at 7 p.m. Friday. This is the seventh year for this concert, which is put on by Roger Wiesmeyer, a Nashville Symphony English horn player, who "loves playing Mozart."
The concert will be at Edgehill United Methodist Church at 1502 Edgehill Ave. A $5 donation is requested, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Proceeds go to the church and to the Nashville Conflict Resolution Center.
(I can't make it to this myself, due to other plans, but Roger's a great guy and a super oboist -- he's played at my own church several times.)
