According to my Franklin Planner, it is John Hancock's birthday, and therefore National Handwriting Day... and I'd planned to make this a calligraphy post, but I am still trying to wrap up assorted other things I'd hoped to have done two days ago, so.

Also, while I generally adore my ThinkPad, it is once again proving it can't install software updates for beans. Yargh.

That said, I am also easily entertained, and this NYT photo of Wyclef Jean and Colin Powell singing together at the BET ball just tickles me silly.

And also:

  • English-only referendum soundly defeated. (And, in the process, literally demonstrated just how many different progressive mailing lists my husband's now on -- he received a half-dozen postcards the day before the vote. I used to joke that between us we had the world divided yet covered -- his realms were business and neighborhoods, mine were religion and politics -- but there's definitely more crossover now,in part because we live in a very politically active neighborhood.)

  • Via the UUA Justice Action Network: Bishop Gene Robinson's prayer for President Obama.

  • Via my church: Let Justice Roll, a national interfaith campaign to raise the minumum wage to $10 by 2010.

  • The kids at First UU are doing a food drive for Second Harvest, which includes the opportunity to "shop" virtually for items to donate (e.g., mac and cheese, green beans, juice boxes...). More details via the link.

  • [Today's subject line is from "I Wish I Knew How," which is in the mainstream UU hymnal. The link will take you to a YouTube clip of Billy Taylor performing it.]
