The Beautiful Young Man and I got back a couple hours ago from New Orleans, where we spent the past four days catching up with Saz and Erac (and getting spoiled by them) and our former neighbor M. The weekend's highlights included walks through the sculpture and botanical gardens beside NOMA; there are nifty manipulations of letterforms in the former (one statue has words erupting from a man's back; another person-form consists exclusively of sheet-metal letters), and at the latter, there are fragrant roses such as Liebezauber in full bloom. The botanical garden was also the site of a Sunday concert featuring Theresa Andersson, a spectacular multi-instrumentalist and vocalist who currently performs as a one-woman show, using two mics and "live looping" to build her songs right in front of the audience. She was wicked fun to watch as she stomped and spun among her instruments and controls -- a glorious mix of preternatural precision and joyful abandon. There was also much walking -- along the river and around Lafayette Square, as well as through the Quarter, along St. Claude (to catch the Goodchildren parade), and around Bywater/Marigny -- and some right fine chowing down. For Easter brunch, Saz and Erac served crawfish-andouille cheesecake, fruit salad, and deep-fried potatoes; other meals involved bbq shrimp and grits, short ribs, and red beans and rice, and assorted wines (Big House Birdman (white), Big House Prodigal Son (red), Gruet sparkling, and Los Cardos malbec) and cocktails. There were also meals out, at Cafe Degas (Bayou St. John area), Cafe Amelie, Schiro's, and Cafe EnVie, where I saw this note on one of the restroom walls:
There was a red raincoat and a Dutch postcard I picked up from Fabulous Art and Books (FAB for short) on Frenchman Street for less than $20 altogether; there were four more books at Beckham's on Decatur, again for less than $20 total (two for the BYM, one for an upcoming gift-day, and a biography of Elizabeth Bowen for me). I slept a lot and crocheted a little...
...and left my planner at home and didn't open my laptop once. In short, it was a lovely break. Read/Post Comments (1) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
