(1) Melvillians: there is or was a record store on Rue Monge called "Moby Disques." (I spotted its awning today (on my way to dinner at Livingstone Thai), but I don't know if it's still in business.)

Also, the second volume of Patrick Mallet's "bande dessinee" (sort of like a graphic novel, but with the length/width dimensions of a coffee-table book and the thickness of a picture book) series on Ahab ("Achab" in French) has just come out. There was a review of it by Kamil Plejwaltzsky in Zoo, a local free magazine about BDs, and the illustrations of "le cachalot blanc" and other elements of the story -- mmm.

(2) We saw an operatic version of Cyrano de Bergerac at Theatre du Chatelet Tuesday night. The only seats left by the time we reached the box office were obstructed view, but it was fine. The sets and costumes were sumptuous (especially for the first act), Placido Domingo hit all the notes he was supposed to (as far as I could tell), and the guy who played Christian was a very good actor. I'd forgotten both how heartbreaking the situation becomes for him -- and also how much I dislike Roxana. She's such a twit, and I now have The Glove and the Lions bouncing through my head in counterpoint.

(3) Thursday is Ascension Day. Should be interesting to see what is(n't) open. The cafes of the Marais and Latin Quarter and the banks of the Seine were still crowded at midnight with people laughing and chatting and consuming assorted beverages and snacks. Granted, this city goes to bed much later than North American ones -- we were up at midnight Tuesday as well, and while it wasn't as populated, there were still more than a dozen clusters of people by the river -- late-night picnickers, couples making out, and at least one group rhythmically clapping and (acoustically) rocking to a reggae melody. We walked across one bridge where, in addition to the usual strolling and striding and lounging and kissing, there was also a guy with a saxophone, and a couple who succumbed to the urge to dance.
