From things that make me happy

Tomato-leek salad (part of my lunch today). I was just telling my friend Rae that leeks are proof that God has a sense of humor, because He has got to be smirking at us when we angst over just how much of a stalk is truly edible (the answer: not near enough! But they're handsome, and the two mouthfuls I carved from three stalks made for a nice dressing for the tomatoes after they were fried with a pat of butter).

Too stupid/stubborn to come out of the rain when called, but such a sweetie nonetheless. (And sometimes that gets said of me, so...) She's a lot more huggable when she isn't stinky wet, but that's doggies for ya.

Lisianthus from Fresh Harvest Co-op, picked up last Wednesday and still purdy. (I'd planned to cook dinner for some friends on Sunday, hence the splurge, but then was up almost all night due to work, so that had to be postponed.) Fresh Harvest is the ideal variation of a CSA for me: you order only what you want, and only when you know you can pick it up. Which means sometimes I'll order several bagfuls three times a month when I'm cooking/entertaining a lot, but then go weeks without placing an order because I'm out of town or too brain-dead to deal with anything beyond mac-and-cheese and prewashed carrots. The big beautiful bundles of Genovese basil alone have been worth it, and both John and Tally (the farmers) are sweethearts.

This last set of photos is for Swwoop, who recently mentioned her love of Swinburne. This is a ruined (from a collector's pov) copy I picked up some years ago -- I just adore the embossing and gilding and detailing, both on the cover and inside:
