2003-09-10 2:15 PM Multi-taskers R Us Okay, well the "Spaceballs"-induced writing mania has paid off! Went home last night, stole my old laptop back from Lizzie, who'd been using it for grad school, and luckily she was distracted enough after her first day of work that she didn't notice until it was too late, and did some writing while she ran off to the library to pick up research books for work.
Emailed about 8 different files of the projects I want to finish up this month over to the laptop, and got to steppin'. I wrote a draft of my 87 CABINETS story (I'm ahead of the game now, as I'm cabinet #84, and they're only on like #40 right now). Now all I have to do is read the other cabinets as they're posted and make any changes if necessary, in case mine doesn't fit with the others. Shouldn't be a problem, as they're all pretty self-contained. Once that was done, I looked over the proofs to INTRACITIES, found some minor tweaks to be made, and emailed those off. So that's almost done! Woo-hoo! I also finished reading the intro to a friend's novel last night and sent off my comments this morning -- EARLY this morning. Woke up at 4 or so and couldn't get back to sleep, so I got the coffee brewing and banged out a page or 2 of the SCRAGS intro, then did some work on the collab I'm doing with Jay. Just finished the collab scene over lunch, and sent it back to Jay. Unfortunately, it wasn't so much a flaming-hamster cliffhanger, but more of a lukewarm field mouse scene-ender. I have confidence Jay can light 'em up. And just like that, I'm caught up! I guess it's sorta obvious I'm fairly deadline-driven. I blame it on all those years in the service, along with my time as an overseas correspondant for the Associated Press. Okay, so maybe I'm exaggerating a bit on those last two facts... But there is something to be said for single-mindedness and good ol' stick-to-it-iveness. Heck, I even read another chapter of Gaiman's STARDUST before work today. Cool stuff, and I'm looking forward to reading more. As I did so, Rega slipped something small and jagged into his robes. There was a tiny sound of porcelain on metal and then, after a dozen steps of our beasts, the shit smell abated, fading into the cool night wind at last. And so, as the last of the light swallowed itself, I stood with a fool at my side in front of the closed, reinforced gates of iron that allowed the only access to Prince Falloe's keep.
