Just got an email from Daniel Blackston at SF Reader that my story about conscripted alien mercenaries looking for a group of survivors on a dying planet and the hopeless man who commands them through a mental mind proxy (while he stays safe on the ship) has won 2nd prize in their annual contest!

The name of the story is "Remainders," and that poor story has been bounced around from so many publishers that I'm ecstatic that it finally found a home. And as part of the prize, the story will be published at their site, I'll get a cash prize of a hundred bucks, and -- the best part -- I get interviewed for the site.

Too cool. I have very fond memories of working on that story in the mornings during World SF Con in San Jose in 2002, while slightly hungover from the previous nights' partying. :)
