Mood: Doh! Read/Post Comments (3) |
2005-02-12 5:49 PM Research -- the neverending quest (Or, Darn You, Google!) Just when I think I'm getting close to nailing down a chapter or two on my baseball novel, I do a little research and realize I'm still nowhere near done with those sections. Not. Just. Yet.
See, the more research I do, the more cool shit I find that I want to add. Like this snippet about the race riots in Chicago in 1919, which were in part instigated 2 years earlier on July 3rd, when "a white saloon-keeper who, according to the coroner's physician, died of heart trouble, was incorrectly reported in the press to have been killed by a Negro." Guess which baseball team was in Chicago on July 3rd, 1917? Doh! I've got to use that. It's too cool not to. I've also gotten fascinated with a site called Born in Slavery, which contains tons of interviews with former slaves. My narrator was a slave as a child, so I'm hoping to get a good feel for his environment while he was growing up and nail down his voice. Interestingly, the interviews were written in dialect, so it's a lot like reading Jim's lines from Huckleberry Finn, what with the "Marse Johnson"'s and lines like "Dey treated us tolerable fair, tolerable fair to a fellow." All this research reminds me of how much I have yet to learn... Later. Read/Post Comments (3) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
