If it's Wednesday, it's got to be progress time...
... Or something like that. Today's been a good day, even though it's been busy. I got up early, wrote that new scene about Taoism and acupuncture and herbs I'd researched yesterday and this morning, and then found time later today to finish revising chapter 14, with the team leaving Cuba and heading to San Francisco, just in time for a women's suffrage demonstration. Nifty.
And just like that I'm 2/3 of the way done with the revising!!! Of course, with the new stuff I've added, the word count is creeping closer to 100,000 instead of 95,000, which would mean I was at 64% instead of 67%, but who's counting? Well, besides me, that is...
One thing I like about that new mini-scene I wrote is that it does more than one thing. This is something I try to do all the time, because it's not only fun to write, but it (hopefully) gives a sense of satisfaction to the reader. But it's tricky, and requires some effort.
Instead of just 2 guys talking on a ship (which is really all the scene is), I have other stuff going on -- the coach is seasick and his player does some quick, unsolicited acupuncture on him (setting up that player as a potential healer for later on in the book) and the conversation carries them through to the end of their voyage. And I also get to give some new details about that player's belief in Taoism and immortality, which is quite fascinating.
I have a couple other scenes I need to do this to, now that I'm thinking about it. Got to do more than just one thing.
Speaking of, I also added a couple new mini-scenes to the novel blog, so go check 'em out. Even if they're short, I'm challenging myself to do one a day, at least while I'm at work, just for kicks. I'm having fun playing around with time in that project.
