2007-05-13 6:02 PM Startup start up. Sitting at the trusty laptop this Sunday with a little bit of Scotch next to me, I think I'm more or less caught up with work. Not fiction writing stuff, unfortunately, but work stuff. Day job stuff. Whew.
What happened was this: I do tech writing and some QA and support on the side at the day job, a small software startup company. I knew my co-worker, who does a lot of support and training for our customers, was going out for at least four weeks in late May to have her baby and recover. What I didn't know was that our director of support/QA/product management would get offered another job (a nice offer, one he couldn't really refuse) elsewhere. His last day is Wednesday. So, I got a promotion as a result -- I'm now in charge of Support and QA as well as the technical publications/writing aspect of my current job. Yikes. I was pretty much a big ball of stress in the past two weeks, but after a LOT of work (10-11 hour days) getting up to speed, I think I'm ready to take the handoff to lead support and QA. And I'm looking forward to it, believe it or not! It's going to be a good challenge, as I figure out how to best help customers and make the Support process more streamlined and meaningful (in case I ever get to hire some minions!). Needless to say, all my fiction writing plans have gone on hiatus. Just two weeks ago I had high hopes of finishing all my revisions to two novels as well as rewriting another one by the end of the summer. Now, I plan on just surviving by the end of the summer, and I'm not even planning on doing any writing. That way if I do find time to squeeze some in, it'll be a pleasant surprise. I do need to find time to copy-edit the entire manuscript for my Wannoshay novel before May 25th. Wish me luck on that end!!! Maybe things will free up once I get in the flow of the new job. If not, well, I'm okay with it. And trust me, it took me about ten days to get okay with that... I'm hoping the hiatus is just what I need to get my creative side reset and back online, to use a lame computer metaphor... Later! Read/Post Comments (7) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
