Parenthetical

So why don't you write a *real* book already?

I've been getting questions from some well-meaning friends lately about how my writing is going. It has admittedly stalled to a complete stand-still amidst my upcoming move back to my hometown (which ironically was something I did to *inspire* some more writing). To make that worse, I was asked by an equally well-meaning friend why I prefer to write genre fiction rather than get into journalism or write a *real* book. The wording was less snarky of course, but my paraphrasing sucks when I'm bitter. I'm laughing, however, because Miss Snark's timing couldn't have been better:

My personal favorite is this one:
6. I'm reserving the great novel for when I need to lower my taxable income.

Followed closely by this one:
9. Yanno, that's exactly what someone asked Stephen King three days before he received the National Book Award for outstanding contribution to American letters.

Now, before I get too many comments about that (yeah, right...), I'm not writing for money. Who in the right mind would write just for the money? *snickers* But really, ultimately, I'd like to get paid to do something I love and enjoy more than anything else in the world. And while I may be crazy to think such things, and possibly even insense those like my mother who believe in hard work and such, I'm doing it anyways.
