Theoretically, arguing sounds like a good idea -- making a case for something and subjecting it to criticism. Learning from the arguments for and against the case. Coming to greater understanding.

But in practice it seems to yield so little fruit. I don't like to believe people are fundamentally so different that they cannot communicate, but I'm less and less optimistic.
