2005-04-28 9:25 AM beauty is better than truth A friend and I occasionally chat about whether truth or beauty is the supreme value. I vote for beauty, while recognizing this may be an artificial bifurcation (for Plato, the good, true and beautiful seem to be ways of talking about the same thing). I think life is an aesthetic creation (Charles Hartshorne has a nifty article on this -- can't remember the title off the top of my head). Perhaps it is the personal nature of knowing the beautiful that outweights knowing the truth for me(unless one reduces truth to simply aesthetics -- 'truth is whatever I feel is true').
If the ultimate truths of life were ugly, would you still hold fast to them? Read/Post Comments (1) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
