military pedagogy

I've never been in the military, so I can't really say what the military does to train people, but what I'm calling 'military pedagogy' is an approach to life that suggests the only real problem is whether you want something bad enough and are man enough to make it happen. If you aren't doing your job, whatever that is, it's basically because you don't care -- don't care enough to figure out what to do or don't care enough to do what you know must be done. And the solution is a boot in your backside.

In a very concrete, short, term situation, I can see how this gets results. People can rise to the occasion when it is very particular. But in the long run this seems a disastrous pedagogy to apply to life, and far too many people apply it to others, and maybe worse, internally to themselves. It is really just a form of violence and dominance, and it filters into all of our relationships to the impoverishment of us all.
