2005-10-06 6:43 AM Lonely songs Quoting "Dock of the Bay" yesterday got me thinking about the theme of loneliness in music and I suddenly realized I could call out a handful of songs from the 60s and 70s on the subject:
Eleanor Rigby Alone Again, Naturally Don't Let Me Be Lonely tonight Fire and Rain Dock of the Bay Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down And I think one of the striking things about these songs is that they aren't generally "break-up" songs, as if the singer is lonely because somebody left them behind. They suggest a deeper layer of existence than that (though I've nothing against a good break-up song either). I don't listen to what's popular today very much. I get the feeling their is a strong sense of ambivalence/alienation in some of it: Evanescence; Wake Me Up, for example. Some days these sorts of songs overwhelm me and some days they help me feel a little less alone. Do you have any favorite "lonely" songs?
