motivation studies

Have you heard the studies on extrinsic and intrinsic motivation? Some suggest that extrinsic rewards actually diminish performance, perhaps because people learn to get rewards rather than to instrinsically enjoy the activity. So some say you shouldn't reward your child for doing the dishes - they should find their way to identifying intrinsic rewards for doing them.

I call BS. Pay me $50 bucks to do the dishes tonight and they'll get done. Don't pay me, and, well, there'll be a pile waiting in the morning. Never have been able to find intrinsic motivation for that. I suspect I never will. ;^)
