Well, OK, I fell once, and it was a slowish slide onto my side that landed me onto sand. It felt a little weird and cool to control the fall once the mind raced and calculated: "OK, you're not going to balance this one" and so I didn't sprain or cut or bruise myself like I kind of expected I would. My mum and I went to the beach today and I rented my first pair of rollerblades. The rental guy who helped me was nice, as I'm sure he was required to be to all hapless beginners. After I got all the provided padding on, the skates were put on my feet with help, and they were much lighter than I expected, which was a relief. Neither was the added height too scary...I was too distracted by the fact my feet kept bloody sliding. It probably didn't help that the benches where we started were on roughly tiled ground that was sloped and separated from the skating/jogging tracks by STEPS (which I learned to fear) and so the first 20 feet that I traveled with the skates was me, being half- hoisted half-dragged to the sandy practice area with my mum on one side of me and the rollerblade rental guy on the other. Halfway on this historic maiden journey, the guy's mobile phone rang and he just had to answer it—and from what I could hear even while I was shrieking from the loss of friction, the caller just had to be his girlfriend. I think one could tell from his answers. He had to insist I was a customer. Once safely escorted to the sandy practice area and still standing, I learned to walk "V"-steps while being entertained by some 3-foot-high tots trying to learn the same thing. Surprisingly I think I progressed faster. With help from my mum I practised rolling across a flat board that'd been laid in the sand, and after that, progressed to the concrete walking tracks and rolling around and controlling my speed (to some extent) without support. That was really kewl. So forty minutes after putting the wheels on I was doing OK, though I would stumble over bumps and stepping onto slopes. Well, I'm going to need more practice. Happy day!
