How can I have never heard of this?

Well, partly because I haven't played much chess since I was in college, and partly because I just never considered it. Sue me; my innate creativity spawns characters who make up games (like relay-dice and tag chess) but I never thought they were real.

Via Teresa, who's so full of neat stuff it should be illegal. Actually, the yarn on Making Light this time is from Jim MacDonald. He was one of my instructors at Viable Paradise, which I went to in 1999. I even remember his "A Novel is Like a Game of Chess" lecture. It was pretty damned cool.
